Money-Saving Tips for the Middle Class – my take on the “depression”

Easy tips to save money in your everyday life.

Easy tips to save money in your everyday life.

I’m not really feeling the disastrous effects of the “depression” that we’re experiencing.  Yes, things are tight, but for someone like me, they’re always tight.  In the news, I keep seeing all these sob stories about comfortable white people feeling sad because now they can’t afford their laptops, ipods, cellphones, and three cars without tapping into their retirement funds.  Boo hoo.  Most of us can’t even afford a “retirement fund” or life insurance, or even health insurance.  Much less ipods and three cars.  It’s been that way for years, especially in poor states like Arkansas.  No one was crying about that, and it didn’t make headline news that someone like me, 18, just out of school and working at Taco Bell could make $650 a month, “too much” for Medicaid to cover a month of my pregnancy (the month where I had a crazy emergency room visit and they charged me $500 for a blood test to see if I was “really pregnant). I had to reduce my hours so I could be considered poor enough for government assistance.  But if I worked overtime like before, I still didn’t have enough to pay doctor’s bills, and barely could pay the other bills. If we lived like my parents or half of my friends (without the knowledge I’m sharing in this series), I couldn’t have afforded to live on that money.  But it was “too much”.
In my opinion, this “depression” has been completely blown out of proportion, similar to the rash of school shootings in the 90′s.  School shooting have been happening for years in inner city schools, LA, New York.  We get upset and hear about it and cry about it when it happens in the Midwest to middle class whites.
Anyway, enough ranting.  If you’re formerly middle class, laid off from your job, or just “tightening your belt” and it’s a first time experience, here are some tips for you, straight from the poor side of town.  I’ll be adding a section two every few days, so stay tuned.
