Movie Review: Thank You for Smoking

Once again, I started watching a movie, expecting a documentary (this time about the evils of the tobacco industry). Instead, I was given a delightful thinking comedy movie about the tobacco industry, lobbyists, spin doctors, and the sales industry.

Nick Naylor is the spokesman for the tobacco industry. He lobbies in Congress, appears on talk shows and news programs, and generally puts a good face on smoking and cigarettes. He is hated by many, but his charisma, charm, and debate skills win many arguments. He’s the ultimate salesman, not sleazy at first glance, but he can sell you anything.

At the same time, he is a divorced father, trying to show his son love and to teach him to think for himself and make good decisions.

This movie is laugh out loud funny in many parts, but also makes you think and could spark lively discussion. I hear that it’s based on a novel, and I’d love to read that (look for the review on here someday!) The satire rings with truth about how the tobacco industry manipulates its users, but it doesn’t preach. In fact, it may convince you that they should be allowed to carry on unrestricted.

This is a thinker, but accessible to the unenlightened as well. So enjoy it, and think about the message.
