Cool Gadget on My Wishlist – Easy Bloom Plant Sensor

My husband is a member of the North American Gardening Club and they sent him info about this nifty little thing.  It’s pretty high tech, yet at the same time, simple.  We all want to know what the best plants are for our houses and gardens.  It really bites to buy some great looking plant on impulse, then get it home and plan it, only to find out that your area has its only natural pests, or you don’t get enough sun, etc.  Before you buy plants or seeds or set up your garden, buy this little device.  Place it in the soil where you want to plant for 24 hours, and let it measure the sunlight, temperature, humidity, soil moisture and drainage in that spot. THEN PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER!  You read that right.  It is a USB device.  It plugs in to your computer and accesses a database of over 5,000 plants and tells you which plants are best for your conditions and which would be a lot of trouble (and why).

I am amazed.  I really want one of these.  The only problem is, it is “not recommended for use outside of the U.S”.  Not that good since I’m currently looking for a place in Europe to settle down.  However, the conditions here are similar to Southern Canada or the Northern US, so it shouldn’t be too far off.  I’m thinking of trying it out.

  1. Hi,
I’m one of the founders of Easybloom. I wanted to answer your question about working out side of the United States. One of the thing that the sensor does, is ‘normalize’ lighting conditions based on cloud cover. For instance a cloudy day might look very “shady” to a plant. So if the sensor detects shady conditions, but it is actually in the middle of a field, then the reading would be inaccurate. For that reason the website checks the cloud cover for the area where the sensor was in the ground and ‘normalizes’ the data based on actual cloud cover.

We do not yet have a feed of the cloud cover by postal code in Europe, which is why it wouldn’t work well there.

    I hope that this helps.

    Best,
    Matt
