Great Depression Cooking Ep:7 – Poorman’s Feast

93 year old cook and great grandmother, Clara, recounts her childhood during the Great Depression as she prepares meals from the era. Learn how to make simple yet delicious dishes while listening to stories from the Great Depression.

To make this meal you need:

bag of lentils
water
1 cup rice
steak (you can get cheap cuts and slice them thin, then pound as thin as you can to get them tender and spread them out more)
lettuce/greens (anything you like or is cheap – if you’re really broke, use dandelion greens!)
olive oil
lemon
black pepper
salt
oregano
bread

Delicious!

  4. You are an excellent story teller. It’s funny how people from all walks of life, have their own stories, the meals they ate and how they lived. Thank you so much. I might try making this meal. I love lentils, I love rice, meat, salad and bread. So there you go. :)
