How can students become more green in school?

Question: Besides using recycled school supplies or driving a hybrid, what are other ways students can become more green?

Our Answer: Take the school bus, walk, or ride your bike instead of driving to school. If you bring your lunch, use reusable lunchbags, thermos, Tupperware containers, etc. instead of paper bags and plastic baggies. Encourage your school to recycle cans, paper, and separate lunch waste to compost or use food waste for animal food, also to use real silverware and glasses instead of disposable plastic. Get your biology program to use software for dissections, instead of using animals filled with harmful chemicals (or killing your own animals).

  1. start a recycling program at your school. paper is an easy one. teaches and students print millions of sheets of paper every year just at one school and most of it ends up in the trash. so recycle instead of throwing it away and encourage teachers to not make handouts for everyone in the class if possible. instead put the assignment on an overhead and have students copy it into a notebook they are already using. contact your local paper recycler. many of them will provide a dumpster where you can throw recycled paper and they will pick it up for you periodically and give you (meaning your school) the money from recycling it. your school district may already have something like this in place. put a little box in each teacher’s room and ask them to recycle whenever possible.
i’m willing to bet your school has vending machines. all those plastic bottles from the vending machines usually end up in the trash. they can be recycled as well. if your school district doesn’t have a program to recycle plastic collect it yourself or among several students and teachers and take it to a local recycler whenever necessary.

  2. They can write on both sides of the paper, recycle paper, and ride their bikes to school.
