Low Maintenance, Easy House Plants

Low Maintenance, Easy House Plants

Question: I need plants that will grow inside. I live in an apartment and cant plant them in the yard. I want something that will grow easy, don’t need a lot of care, and no colorful blooms. I like green plants.

Our Answer: When I was a teenager, I wanted to have plants in my room. But I was totally irresponsible, and they all died. I even killed cacti! The one thing I did manage to grow was aloe vera. My secret? I forgot all about it! No water, nothing. It just sat in half sunlight. It never got very big, though. My mom always had good luck with African violets. They hate to be touched, and they can’t be watered on their leaves. But if you just don’t touch them, give them a slight bit of water, maybe some plant food (available at all fine stores, such as Wal-Mart. haha), they can grow quite big. In the summer, you often see them at garden supply centers for $5 or less.

Bromeliads are also a great choice, although they can be expensive. You can sometimes find cheap small ones during the gardening season. These are air plants that get their nutrients from the air. They don’t even need soil! No brainer. You just spray them well every 2 or 3 days. And they can be very, very beautiful. You can hot glue them to driftwood and make beautiful living displays in your house.
