What is the best way to prepare canned green beans?
By Leighann on Jul 4, 2009 in Vegetarian Cooking, What's Cooking?
I'd like a tastier way to prepare canned green beans rather than just heating them up on the stove. Should I ad some bacon? Some tasty spices? Give me some ideas and thanks in advance!
Mmm… green beans. My mom used to make wonderful green beans…from a can. It’s about the only canned vegetable I really like. Completely unhealthy, but sometimes it’s good to indulge.
For about 3 people, use one can of green beans.
1. Drain the green beans
2. Saute/fry for a few minutes with butter (about a fourth of a stick), salt and pepper. They should be fairly dry at the end, but don’t burn them!
That’s all she did. I also find they’re good like this but instead of salt and pepper use garlic powder, a pinch of bouillon powder, Mrs. Dash, or other herb/spice mixtures.
Another thing. The best ones were the french cut green beans. My mom would make those as above, and add cheddar cheese at the last minute, letting it melt in. Mmmm…She used to work at the cafeteria at school, and the kids would actually eat the green beans when she made them like that.
You can basically do the same thing with fresh or frozen green beans, but they have to be cooked a long time

kat's right forget about the canned and go for the frozen if not fresh
canned ones are really mushy unless you're making chili or soup
you can add them to fried rice or like i said CHILI!! mmm
you can add them to omelette too!!! or just add them and some bacon bits to scramble eggs
oh add them to your bolongese or alfredo sauce too

Personally, I say forget the can and go fresh or frozen….
Rinse them really well. Saute some onion and garlic in butter until they are soft. Toss in some slice almonds and add the green beans. Cook until just heated through. Enjoy!

They're great sauteed with some fresh garlic, diced, or almonds. Adding bacon is a good idea, too. You could make the bacon, drain the grease off and use it to sautee the beans. Then crumble the bacon and mix it in.

I drain the water out of the can and then add some beef broth and some onions and some thyme. Just a little thyme. Yumm!

Sprinkle them with a little garlic powder before heating them up, and then squeeze a couple tablespoons of fresh lemon juice after heated and drained. This goes very well with fish or chicken dishes, but if you're making beef or pork, I'd probably go with the recipes that add bacon.
I keep canned green beans on hand for when I can't get to the store, but it is true that fresh, or those long thin frozen green beans are so much better. They don't take as long to cook as you might think either!

You should really turn to "fresh" green beans!
Generally, vegetables that are fresh are more nutritious than their frozen or canned.
But if all you have is "canned" green beans
Then lets work with that !

I would add some bacon bits to my canned beans
Also, some sauted garlic chips would be very tasty too!
I hope that helps!
Good luck!

throw them away and eat fresh green beans. Canned vegetables are not very clean. Bacon never hurts, maybe some garlic, chili flakes, onions, mushrooms, or oregano.
