Why are green bell peppers cheaper than red and yellow ones?

Question: I've noticed that green bell peppers are almost twice cheaper than red and yellow ones. Why?

The NewsBase.com’s Answer: If you’ve ever grown bell peppers, you probably noticed that the green ones turned red after a while. But it takes time and patience, and I’ve always had bugs get to mine before they were ready. Green bell peppers are unripe. You can still eat them, but the colored ones are riper and have a sweeter flavor. They take a longer time to grow, and there is a smaller supply because they are difficult to get to maturity. It’s easier to just sell/use the green ones. Which is fine. I personally prefer red bell peppers. They have a wonderful, complex flavor, especially when lightly sauteed or roasted, and they add great color to dishes. I like them raw too.

  1. They are the same plant, but green peppers haven't ripened yet. They have to stay on the plant another few weeks ro ripen into red or yellow peppers, and since the farmers can't pick and ship as often, this eats into their profit and they make it up by charging more wholesale.

  3. Not on the vine as long so there's not as much care given to them. Red peppers are simply green ones that have ripened to that point.

  4. I buy peppers everytime I go to the store. Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Jalapeno. I believe the prices fluxuate, depending on the season.

It could be a quantity thing (they have more green peppers, so to sell more they make the price less). Or maybe it's supply and demand (nobody is buying green peppers, so we sell them cheaper to boost interest). You could always ask the people running the store?
